Swedish Meatballs (Ikea Meatballs)

These chicken meatballs are so moorish that it’s not even funny! Super tender and juicy, pairing so beautifully with creamy mash potato and a side of greens. It’s the ultimate midweek dinner.

Swedish Meatballs (KÖTTBULLAR)

MEATBALLS

  • 2 slices of bread, soaked in milk and chopped small

  • 1 onion, grated (brown, white, or yellow)

  • 600g chicken mince or 300g ground beef + 300g ground pork

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 - 1 cup breadcrumbs (adjust if needed)

  • 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp All Spice powder

  • 1/4 tsp white pepper

  • 3/4 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp oil

  1. In a large bowl, combine soaked bread, grated onion, mince, eggs, breadcrumbs, nutmeg, All Spice, white pepper, and salt.

  2. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until well combined.

  3. Shape the mixture into meatballs of your desired size.

  4. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

  5. Brown the meatballs on all sides until cooked through, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.

GRAVY

  • 40g salted butter

  • 3 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth/stock or chicken broth

  • Cream (as needed)

  • Parsley for garnish

  1. In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat.

  2. Add flour and cook, stirring continuously, until it turns golden brown.

  3. Gradually whisk in the broth until the gravy thickens.

  4. Stir in cream for a velvety texture.

  5. Return the meatballs to the pan, coating them in the gravy.

  6. Simmer for a few more minutes.

  7. Serve the Swedish meatballs hot, garnished with parsley, and a side of mash and greens of your choice. Enjoy!
