Croatian Plum Dumplings (Knedle s Sljivama)

This recipe brings me straight back to my childhood. I have fond memories of having dinner at my Nunny’s house, and she would bring out these beautiful Knedle for us to all enjoy. I remember always being so full after these, they are super filling and we would often eat them as a meal itself!

There is no other recipe quite like this, the flavour of these plum dumplings is so unique and truly delicious. They are a sweet treat made from a gnocchi style potato dough, which covers sweet, sugar filled plums and gets coated in a delicious toasted bread crumb and cinnamon sugar mix.

Knedle just like your Nonna makes it.

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled, boiled, mashed, cooled

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 16 small plums or fewer larger ones, pitted (they must be sweet plums in order for the recipe to be delicious - make sure of this first by testing them!)

  • 16 sugar cubes

  • 4 tablespoons (2 ounces) salted butter

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • Confectioners' sugar, for optional garnish

  • Ground cinnamon, for optional garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potato Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled mashed potatoes, beaten eggs, salt, and all-purpose flour. Mix until a dough forms.

  2. Prepare the Plums:

    • Take each pitted damson plum and gently press a sugar cube into the center.

  3. Assemble the Dumplings:

    • Take a small amount of the potato dough and flatten it in your hand. Place a sugar-filled plum in the center and wrap the dough around the plum, sealing it completely.

  4. Cook the Dumplings:

    • Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil. Carefully place the dumplings in the boiling water and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until they float to the surface.

  5. Prepare the Toppings:

    • In a separate pan, melt the unsalted butter. Add the breadcrumbs and toast them until golden brown.

  6. Serve:

    • Once the dumplings are cooked, remove them from the water using a slotted spoon. Roll each dumpling in the toasted breadcrumbs.

  7. Garnish:

    • Optional: Sprinkle the knedle plum dumplings with confectioners' sugar and ground cinnamon before serving.

  8. Enjoy your delicious Knedle Plum Dumplings!

    With love,

    Tara x
